Where to Eat Local in Falun: A Dalarna Food Guide
7 Aug 2026
Falun sits at the heart of Dalarna, and it's one of the best places in the region to eat and shop local. Here's a short guide to get you started.
Start with the food that's named after the town
Falun gave its name to falukorv, the mild smoked sausage found in every Swedish fridge — a reminder that this town has been a centre of trade and craft since its copper-mining days. The old Falun Mine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and that heritage of making things well carries through to the local food scene.
Seek out the farm shops
Dalarna is farm country. Around Falun you'll find gardsbutiker (farm shops) selling eggs, root vegetables, preserves, honey and baked goods straight from the producer. They're seasonal by nature, so what's on the shelf changes through the year — that's part of the appeal.
- Spring & summer: fresh greens, the first strawberries, and midsummer favourites.
- Autumn: mushrooms, lingonberries, root vegetables and preserves.
- Winter: hearty baking, smoked and cured produce, and Christmas markets.
Coffee and cinnamon buns
No guide to a Swedish town is complete without fika. Falun's bakeries and cafes are the easiest way to taste local — a coffee and a freshly baked kanelbulle is the ritual that ties the day together.
Time it with the season
If you can, plan around Dalarna's calendar. Midsummer in Dalarna is among the most traditional in Sweden, and the region's markets and festivals are when local producers come out in force.
